You know, I’ve never really been great at meditating. No matter how many times I’ve tried, clearing my mind just seems impossible—even for just five minutes!
I’ve made plenty of attempts. I love exploring new ways to improve myself, reduce stress, and add more meaning to my life, but traditional meditation never really stuck.
That’s when I stumbled upon intention setting, and it changed everything. It’s a different way of thinking about meditation - instead of trying to empty your mind, which was what I thought you were supposed to try to do - you focus it - on a thought, a feeling, or an energy you want to bring into your day.
My mind always seems to wander right back to the things I’m trying to escape when left to its own devices. Like the never-ending to-do list on my desk, or what to make for dinner, or the bills the need to be paid. So, focusing on an intention really gave me something more action-oriented for my meditations, if that makes any sense at all.
I learned about Intention setting when I first reached for a yoga video during the Covid lockdown.
But, stay with me here because you don’t need to practice yoga to incorporate this into your everyday life (although I am a huge advocate for yoga for everyone).
During Covid, Like so many other people, I was bored, restless, and spiraling into a cycle of anxiety that was only making everything worse. I didn’t think yoga was going to be for me, but I figured, why not give it a try. What did I have to lose?
I’m not being dramatic when I say I was hooked from the very first class. It was transformative—but not in the way I expected.
Physically? I felt ridiculous attempting the poses at first. But over time, I got better, and years later, I’m still improving. Yoga has absolutely helped my balance, mobility, and flexibility, and that has become increasingly important with each passing year.
But what really kept me coming back to the mat wasn’t the physical practice—it was the mind-body connection I was learning for the first time.
As I settled onto my mat for the very first class, the instructor invited us to take five deep breaths and set an intention for our practice:
Think of a single word or phrase that reflects why you’re here today and what you want to carry with you beyond this class.
That day, with so much fear and uncertainty looming, I closed my eyes and set my intention: to focus on the positive and generate a sense of peace for myself and my family.
Throughout the practice, I kept returning to that intention. With every inhale, I breathed in clarity. With every exhale, I let go of the negative noise. And something shifted.
By the end of class, I felt more grounded, more in control—not of the world around me, but of my own energy. That clarity stayed with me throughout the day. I was more present, less reactive, and more intentional in how I showed up for my family.
That was the moment I realized that setting daily intentions wasn’t just a yoga practice—it was a Life Practice.
Since that time, I have incorporated intention setting as a daily habit and an essential part of my morning ritual. It takes just a few minutes each morning, but the impact is undeniable.
By consciously choosing how I want to feel and what I want to focus on, I manifest the energy I need for the day ahead and for the life I am creating.
It’s incredible how well this works to block out distractions that would have otherwise hijacked my focus and dictated my mood.
Now, instead of reacting to the chaos around me, I move through my day with clarity, purpose, and a sense of calm that stays with me—on and off the yoga mat.
Whether your intention is abundance, creativity, passion, joy, movement, physical health, or something else entirely, the beauty of this practice is that it can be anything.
Each day, you have the power to choose how you want to show up, and that choice—simple as it may seem—can transform everything.
How Intention-Setting Differs from Goal-Setting
Setting an intention is different from setting a goal in that it focuses on being rather than doing. Goals are outcome-driven—they revolve around achieving something specific, like losing weight, earning a promotion, or saving money. Intentions, on the other hand, are about the energy and mindset you bring into your daily life.
Goals are future-oriented; intentions ground you in the present.
Goals focus on external achievements; intentions cultivate inner alignment.
Goals rely on structured plans; intentions encourage fluidity and mindfulness.
By setting an intention, you create a foundation that supports your goals by ensuring that your thoughts, actions, and emotions are aligned with the energy you want to bring into your life.
The Science Behind Manifestation & Mindset
Manifestation is often associated with spirituality, but there is science behind it. The brain's Reticular Activating System (RAS) plays a crucial role in filtering information and directing our focus. When you set an intention, your brain starts seeking out information, opportunities, and experiences that align with that intention.
Neuroplasticity – Your brain adapts based on repeated thoughts and actions. Setting intentions regularly strengthens positive neural pathways.
The Law of Attraction – While often linked to metaphysical ideas, there is evidence that a focused and intentional mindset increases receptivity to opportunities and solutions.
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy – What you expect influences your actions, which in turn shapes your reality.
By consistently setting intentions, you train your mind to recognize and act upon opportunities that align with your desired outcomes.
How Yoga & Mindfulness Practices Reinforce Intentions
Yoga and mindfulness provide a structured way to integrate intentions into daily life. These practices emphasize awareness, presence, and connection between the mind and body—key components of setting and embodying intentions.
Breathwork (Pranayama) – Consciously breathing with an intention can regulate the nervous system and reinforce focus.
Meditation – Helps quiet mental chatter, making it easier to connect with your deepest desires and set meaningful intentions.
Mantras & Affirmations – Repeating affirmations during yoga or mindfulness practices can further strengthen intentions.
When practiced consistently, yoga and mindfulness help reinforce the habit of setting intentions, allowing them to become an integral part of your daily life.
A Simple Daily Intention-Setting Ritual
Want to start manifesting the life you want? Try this simple morning ritual:
Sit in Stillness: Before checking your phone or jumping into tasks, take a moment to breathe.
Set Your Intention: Ask yourself, How do I want to feel today? What energy do I want to bring into my day?
Write It Down: Journaling your intention reinforces it in your subconscious mind.
Repeat It Often: Throughout the day, revisit your intention and align your actions with it.
Reflect in the Evening: Before bed, check in—how did your intention shape your day?
